Setting Intentions for The New Year!

2020 is around the corner and I AM HERE FOR IT! January is my favorite month not only because it’s my birthday month, but also because I love the concept of new beginnings. Checking tasks off my to-do list, setting goals, making a game plan and finding vision bring life to my soul! As you reflect on your last year and anticipate a new one, here are some thoughts to consider.

Goals VS. Intentions

When you are setting goals for the new year, set intentions for them. A goal is something you strive to achieve while an intention is the purpose behind them. Finding the why behind your goals is key. Why do you want to wake up earlier? Why do you want to lose weight? Why do you want to start a business? When distractions arise and excuses flood through your brain, you need to have a quick response and reason to push on. Your mindset matters and in order to reach your goals, you need to be intentional in how you get there.

MAKE A PLAN

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” I don’t know who made that statement, but I couldn’t agree more. You can’t just have good intentions and expect to reach your goals. You have to have a strategy and specific steps in order to get there. If you want to get your degree, you have to enroll in class and actually complete assignments. If you want to buy a house, you have to have a savings plan and say no to little luxuries to get there. If you want to experience more joy, you have to prioritize the people and things that bring you life and set more boundaries around the areas that dim your spirit. You get the point. Achieving your goals takes choosing to show up every single day. It’s easy to dream about a future version of yourself. It’s harder to acknowledge the challenges along the way. Anticipate what challenges you will face and make a plan on how to face them.

FIND ACCOUNTABILITY

We aren’t meant to do life alone! It will be much easier to have people around you with similar ambitions to pursue your goals. They don’t have to have the same intentions or game plan but having people in your corner that remind you why you do what you do is what will help you get through the hard days.

So, go call your girlfriends and pour some wine (or scoop ice cream if that’s more your style) and start finding some vision for your life! What do you want your future self to look like? How does she feel and what does she spend her time doing? What steps do you have to take to get there? What barriers will you have to overcome along the way?
