The Marriage License- When, Where & Who

You’ve said “I Do” but now let’s make it legal! The signing of the marriage license may be the most important part of the wedding day, yes even before the first look and dancing. This document will legally bind the two of you together. Do you have questions about who, when, or where? We’ve got you covered with all of that and even a special surprise!

WHERE

The marriage license actually has to be obtained before the wedding. Each state has a little differentiation in rules so pay close attention to these! There is usually a period of time after you get it before you can actually get married. They also are only good for about 90 days. So if you are a super planner, hold off for just a bit! Ladies, and gents, make this a fun time. Wear a cute little white dress to go to the county clerk’s office! Last important detail- make sure you are getting your license in the state you plan to say “I Do” in. If you are having a destination wedding, plan some time a few days ahead to visit and get your license.

WHO

There will be a few important people at the signing of the marriage license. Your officiant will sign the marriage license and ultimately be the one to mail it back to the county clerk’s office. Of course, you and your groom will be signing the license as well. The next two people who need to be there will be your two witnesses. This role generally goes to the maid of honor and best man or a brother and sister.

WHEN

This next topic is exciting as there is a way to personalize such a legal aspect. Many people sign their marriage license during the ceremony. We have a different and very fun idea for you brides! Consider signing this during the reception. You and your groom can celebrate with everyone during dinner while the two of you are at your sweetheart's table. And even finish it off with a celebratory toast! Then it’s open dance floor time to celebrate the official legality of your marriage.
